When I was ten, I wanted to be a teacher because my mother was a teacher, and I always liked to read the teacher books that she brought home.
My favorite comfort food is chicken with rice (arroz caldo). When I was still a young girl growing up in the Philippines, my mother always made this dish whenever I was sick. I think it is the equivalent of American chicken noodle soup.

I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, and caring, atmosphere. It helps them grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, and socially. It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. I believe that building a relationship with them and setting high expectations for all students helps them become successful and become life long learners.

My superhero power would be the power to change the domestic environment of students in poverty, in the schools in which I serve. I wish I had resources at hand that could provide clothes to put on my students backs, toiletries so they could have special items to freshen up with at school; A company that would provide free haircuts and styling services so our children could feel good and look good; A chef to come in and offer dinner to students whose last meal comes from the school during their lunch period. All I need is a magic wand to zap in all of these resources that are necessary to increase the motivation in our students to make them see life from a different lens.
A judge. I was so fascinated about the power of being the ultimate decision maker in the court of law. However, I did not see then that I have more power now than before as an Administrator. I am a powerful contributor to helping students make decisions that will impact their lives forever.

My philosophy of teaching is built around teaching the whole child. Teachers must not only teach to their students minds, but also to their character. Learning how to be courteous and respectful to others is just as important as learning how to read and write. Students should know what makes a good citizen in a community. They should also know that while the responsibility of the teacher is to teach, it is the responsibility of the student to learn. It is my responsibility to establish an environment where students will be inspired and motivated to learn. This is a philosophy that I teach daily in my classroom.
