HOUSTON ESSAYS

K-2 Winners

My teachers name is Miss Kristie. She is a kindergarten teacher. This is her first year teaching. She makes me sit down and do my work. We learn our ABC's and 123's. We learn to read, write and do math. I like my teacher because she takes me to recess and she reads to us. She lets us play with blocks. Miss Christie talks to us about a lot of things. My teacher is the best teacher in the whole world. She is good and very friendly.

Armando Soto - 6 - Kindergarten - First Place
Virgil Grissom Elementary - Keris Christie (teacher)

My favorite teacher is Ms. Vogan because she stands out from the rest. She is a very good teacher and makes me feel happy when she teaches. She always makes learning very fun. My teacher loves to teach and meet new kids. She teaches me science and social studies, all things that I have never learned about! She is fantastic!

Kevin George - 7 - 2nd Grade - Runner-Up
Hassler Elementary - Mrs. Vogan (teacher)

3-4 Winners

Ms. Grissom is a fourth grade teacher at Boone Elementary School. She teaches math, science and social studies. Ms. Grissom teaches me a lot, I mean a whole lot! I can remember a time I was struggling with multiplication and division; she would always explain it to me until I understood. Whenever she tells me that I am doing a good job, it makes me feel proud of myself. I know that my teacher loves to teach because we almost have never had a substitute. She is very nice and we always do really fun activities in her class. I will miss her when I move to the fifth grade, but she is the one who will help get me there.

Michelle Vo - 4th grade - 10 - 1st Place
Boone Elementary - Kisha Grissom (teacher)

Mrs. Davis is my music teacher and she is the best teacher in the whole school! She spends a lot of time teaching us to play our very best. If it were not for Mr. Davis I would not enjoy music as much as I do now. I think my teacher; Mrs. Davis should win because she is one in a million.

Terrence Green - 4th Grade - 9 - Runner-Up
Dodson Elementary - Mrs. Carolyn Davis (teacher)

A Special Man

Mr. Stephens is a History teacher at Welch Middle School. He is also over a club called the Gents of Welch. Welch is the only middle school that has a club like this; it is well know in high schools. Mr. Stephens teaches us how to become men. He talks to us about morals and we are required to wear dress shirts and ties to school on Fridays. Some of the boys do not own these clothes, but Mr. Stephens makes sure every boy has a dress shirts and tie. He teaches us how to be leaders and gentlemen. A lot of boys were in gangs before meeting him and joining the club. He gives us a chance to show that we can do things that no one else believes we can. I can talk to Mr. Stephens about things that I can't talk to my own Dad about. He is special, and I know he cares about us and wants us to be successful. God gave everyone their own talent. Mr. Stephens talent is to teach boys how to become real men.

Clyde Harmon Jr.

Clyde Harmon, Jr. - 13 - 8th grade - 1st Place
Welch Middle School - Mr. James Stephens (teacher)

I am a student at Monarch School and my teacher, Mr. Ken is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He loves to teach art and encourages us to be creative and artistic. He thinks of our art as unique and agrees with me on some of my points of view on art. I have learned to make clay pots, faster, better looking, stronger and in more shapes than ever before. My teacher makes us feel happy and proud of what we have done. He helps our creativity by making us laugh while we are working. Mr. Ken is fun to be around and enjoys teaching. Mr. Ken tells funny stories, listens, he is kind and gentle and this is why I think he should win.

Joshua Naccarato - 12 - 7th grade - Runner-Up
Monarch School - Ken Stueart (teacher)

9-12 Winners

What can you say about a teacher that gives his all for benefit and well-being of his students? Who sacrifices his time an efforts everyday before, during and after school, who is continuously encouraging and motivating students to do their best in everything they do, further their education and to make something of themselves? I can say a tremendous amount of things about a teacher like this because he is my senior AP English IV teacher at Sam Houston High School.

Mr. Greenfield is indeed the most challenging, but best teacher I have had throughout my high school years. Mr. Greenfield stays on us daily about things like being tardy to class and turning in dilatory assignments because he says "I expect more from you kids." If you are in his class you MUST do your work or you will FAIL...there are no more choices and there are definitely no excuses!

From day one until now, I can honestly say that I along with many other students in his classes have improved our writing skills significantly and have definitely learned not to procrastinate. I have learned better study tactics and skills for test taking and now making nothing lower than a B+ on any of my weekly vocabulary test that Mr. Greenfield creates for us with quotes on them such as "If you studied you will pass!" or "No one ever excused his way to success."

Mr. Greenfield is the most unique teacher at Sam Houston that any senior will run across. Why? Because he is knowledgeable in everything he does and says a he truly cares for every single student he comes across, "it's really a blessing for me to teach you kids. It really is," as Mr. Greenfield always says. He is extremely passionate about what he does, because it is rare he will ever miss a day, sick or not. Mr. Greenfield makes me feel like I can do whatever I put my mind to, and motivates and encourages me when I get frustrated even when he is not aware of it. I appreciate him for everything he has done for me through his teaching to better prepare me for college.

If any teacher in America deserves this prize; it is my senior AP English IV teacher, Mr. Myron Greenfield. He has worked all year pushing us as close to success as he possibly can and encouraging us to go the extra mile to achieve our goals no matter what anyone says or does, and I personally believe he should be honored and rewarded for it.

Gerrelyn Davidson - 18 - 12th grade - 1st Place
Sam Houston High School - Myron Greenfield (teacher)

Mr. Tony DeSoto is a very unique person. His bubbly, outward, friendly personality draws all the kids in the school toward him, making him everyone's favorite teacher. Mr. DeSoto teaches English at our school, and I have always had trouble memorizing the difference between prepositions, adjectives, and pronouns, but he is so patient with me and continues to explain it again and again until I understand. I really appreciate all the work he does to help me and the other students understand our homework. He is also helping me write a fiction novel, I have been working on it for a month or two. Every week I write a couple of pages and he proofreads them for me. I am so excited and ecstatic that Mr. DeSoto supports my novel.

I am very glad that Mr. DeSoto came into my life. He is a special friend to me; he has helped me get through a lot of hard times.

Katrina Vidos - 10th grade - Runner-Up
Beresford School - Mr. Tony DeSoto (teacher)

AUSTIN ESSAYS

Dr. Philip Powell has taught me more than any other teacher ever could. I am incredibly blessed to be educated by a man as wise as he. Of course, as my language arts teacher, he has helped me to further understand writing and grammar. However, his knowledge and comprehension of life are his greatest teaching tools. From Dr. Powell's words, I have learned how to infuse life experiences into writing and vice versa.

Dr. Powell loves to teach and always has a smile on his face. He is extremely cheerful and never fails to greet everyone he passes in the hallways. Full of stories about his outstanding travel experiences, his days as a professor at Yale University, and so much more, Dr. Powell sets himself apart from all other middle school teachers. His worldliness and positive attitude are two of his most admirable qualities.

A relaxed, civil gentleman, Dr. Powell always writes and speaks with wisdom and eloquence. He is very kind to his students as long as his pupils are respectful of him. A true renaissance man, Dr. Powell is the greatest teacher I know.

Connor Smith - 8th grade - 1st Place
Wiley Middle School - Dr. Philip Powell (teacher)

I love my teacher because she is so great. Her name is Mrs. Sosa. She teaches us everything like alphabet, numbers, dictation, math, reading and manners. She is a very beautiful lady. I hope someday I will be a good teacher like her.

Francisca Li - 5 years old - Runner-Up
Strickland Christian School - Mrs. Sosa (teacher)

DALLAS/FORT WORTH ESSAYS

Ms. Potts is a great teacher. She has a great sense of humor, never lies, and is someone you can come to when you have a problem. She is a teacher that actually teachers you and doesn't just give you a paper and expect you to make a 100. All the students love Ms. Potts.

Ms. Potts laughs with us, makes us laugh and we make her laugh. She tells us funny stories, like when she told a boy off. She has a great sense of humor. You cannot go in her class and come out with a straight face. I am telling you, she's "da' bomb!" I love her sense of humor and funniness.

Ms. Potts keeps her word and is a great person to be around. She once promised us a pizza party and we sure did have it. I think she never lies because she is not that kind of person that was taught to do so. It is very hard not to lie, and I admire her for not lying. That is why kids always come to tell her their problems.

Ms. Potts is a reliable teacher, so you can always come to her for advice. She will give you privileges as long as you can do the work, and take it seriously. She tells us stories I can relate to when IU come her with a problem. You can always count on Mr. Potts. Ms. Potts loves her students like her own kids. Therefore you can come to her.

Mariah Clements - 5th grade - 1st Place

Mrs. McKenna's Class:

My teacher is fun! My teacher makes me feel special. My teacher is very happy every day. Our teacher teaches us how to add and subtract large numbers. Our class has a garden. We plant squash, onions, tomatoes and more. After everything has grown, we eat it. All the vegetables taste good. I love my teacher. She is the best!

PHOENIX ESSAYS

My name is Jacob Burns and I'm in the 5th grade at Booker t. Washington Elementary School in Mesa, Arizona. I'm going to tell you why I love my teach so...much.

My fifth grade teacher, Mr. Urban is my favorite teacher. Hs makes learning fun and easy. When he's teaching history no one in my class wants to go out to recess. My teacher LOVES teaching too!! My favorite subject used to be reading, but now I don't have one, I LOVE them all!! I've never learned so much in just one year. I love 5th grade a lot now. When I was in 4th grade, I thought I would hate 5th grade but I love it. In math, I've learned lots of stuff, including the number for PI which is 3.14, exponents, and finding circumferences of a circle. When our class made our A.R. (Accelerated Reading) goal he dyed his hair blond and it really encouraged my class to read.

Mr. Urban is my favorite teacher, and the best teacher I've ever had! I really hope he moves up to teach 6th grade. My whole class would be so EXCITED if he moved up!! He really is the best teacher ever!

Jacob Burns - 5th grade
Washington Elementary - Mr. Urban (teacher)

My Teacher

My teacher Miss Baker loves teaching. She helps us twenty-four-seven with school work. She cares about us so much that the kids who say they can't do their work can because she tells them they can. She loves coming to school because she loves teaching us. We have fun working. That's my teacher Miss Baker.

Crystal Johnson - 4th grade
